CHAVAKACHCHERI: A special session of the Chavakachcheri Urban Council, convened to protest the dismissal of its Vice Chairman, Gnanaprakasam Kishore, by the Governor, has been postponed due to the absence of a quorum.
The Governor of the Northern Province had previously appointed a one-person inquiry committee via a gazette notification to investigate various allegations against the Vice Chairman. The charges included an incident where he allegedly heavily criticized and threw away a circular issued by the Commissioner of Local Government during a council session. Based on the findings of this inquiry report, the Northern Province Governor issued a Gazette Extraordinary on the 24th, officially declaring the positions of Vice Chairman and Local Government Member held by Kishore as vacated.
In response to this development, the Chairman (Mayor) of the Urban Council had summoned a special council session yesterday (Friday) to pass a resolution condemning the Governor's gazette notification and demanding its revocation.
However, the session had to be adjourned without proceedings as the majority of the council members failed to attend, resulting in a lack of the required quorum.
Out of the 18 members comprising the Chavakachcheri Urban Council, 10 members boycotted the special session. The absentees included six members from the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), three from the National People's Power (NPP), and one from the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP). The 08 members who were present consisted of six members from the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) and two from the Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA).
