An Editorial Note
Founded years ago in the Tamil digital media landscape with a singular, uncompromising maxim—Thooyavai Thunivom—Vakeesam returns today after a period of strategic silence, completely revitalized in form, structure, and language. While shifting realities temporarily quieted our pages, our editorial courage to document the unfiltered truths of this soil remains absolute.
Today, Vakeesam officially transitions its primary medium of publication from Tamil to English. This is not merely a linguistic shift; it is a historical imperative born out of contemporary global necessities. Handled now by an editorial collective to meet global standards, this evolution expands our horizon without altering our core values.
1. Breaking the International Silence
The Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka—The North-East Heartland—are not just geographical demarcations. They represent the traditional homeland of the Tamil people, embedded with a distinct culture, a rich history, and complex socio-economic realities. Historically, the political developments, structural challenges, and daily aspirations of this region have been written and debated almost exclusively in Tamil.
While writing in Tamil seamlessly connects us with our immediate community and the global diaspora, it fundamentally hits a wall when reaching the international arena. Diplomatic missions in Colombo, global human rights organizations, international journalists, and geopolitical analysts do not read Tamil. Consequently, the authentic grassroots narratives of our people remain confined within a linguistic barrier, effectively muted from global discourse. Vakeesam adopts English to dismantle this barrier and project our raw, authentic voice directly onto the global stage.
2. Unfiltered Grassroots Documentation
It cannot be argued that the North-East is entirely absent from English media. However, Colombo-centric mainstream English outlets routinely view and project our regional dynamics through their own political, commercial, or institutional filters.
Critical realities—ranging from structural land dynamics and the erasure of archaeological heritage to the livelihood struggles of local fishermen and acute regional economic crises—must be documented in a global language with their original potency intact. The world does not just need external observers looking in; it requires an independent, credible global voice operating directly from the ground, experiencing these vulnerabilities firsthand, and archiving them to international journalistic standards. Vakeesam steps into that vacuum.
3. Beyond the Headlines
Journalism is more than a chronological catalog of daily incidents; it is the primary source code from which a society's history is written. Moving forward, Vakeesam will steer away from the hyper-reactive race for 24-hour breaking news. Instead, we position ourselves as an analytical think-tank portal focusing on Context (the undercurrents of an event) and Perspective (its long-term structural implications).
Our coverage will expand deeply into preserving our rich Culture & Heritage, featuring exclusive, unvetted Interviews with local stakeholders, and decoding how emerging technologies and artificial intelligence reshape human society under our Intelligence vertical.
Our Unwavering Ethos
Management structures and languages may evolve, but the soul of Vakeesam remains unshakeable. To reflect our modernization, we proclaim our new global motto: "Truth, Boldly Spoken." We will not chase sensationalism, nor will we capitulate to institutional pressures. We commit to speaking the truth in its purest form, in the language the international community watches.
As Vakeesam embarks on this critical new trajectory, we invite our global readers, thinkers, and expatriates to extend their support and intellectual contribution.
